Why does SSD free space keep decreasing even when I do not save files?
Windows updates, restore points, browser caches, virtual machines and app data can grow automatically. Compare scans of the same volume over time, then verify the owning application before removing anything.
Step-by-step diagnosis on Windows
- Record the free-space figure and the time in Windows Settings → System → Storage.
- Run WizTree on the affected NTFS volume and sort folders by allocated size.
- Save a CSV inventory or write down the five largest growing paths.
- Repeat the same scan after a known interval, without changing the scan scope.
- For a growing path, inspect the owning application and its own cleanup or retention settings.
Interpretation checklist
| Finding | What it may mean |
|---|---|
| C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution | Windows Update delivery/cache data; use Windows cleanup tools rather than manually deleting active update files. |
| C:\Users\ | Application caches and profiles; clean inside the responsible application. |
| VM disk files (*.vhdx, *.vmdk) | Virtual disks may expand as guest systems change; snapshot and backup rules matter. |
Safety and limitations
Do not delete hibernation, pagefile, restore, or virtual-disk files solely because they are large.
WizTree provides a file inventory; it does not establish file ownership, deletion safety or the health of storage hardware. Review Windows and the relevant application's documentation before changes.
How to verify the result
Record the scan date, Windows version, filesystem, drive and metric used. Make one approved change at a time, then rerun the same scan and compare Windows free space. A predicted saving is not a measured saving.

Sources and methodology
Based on public WizTree technical documentation and Microsoft Windows storage management guidance. No independent runtime or binary testing is claimed. Check the instructions for your installed version before changing system files.
